The Curonian Spit is why many cruise passengers remember Klaipėda. This UNESCO World Heritage sand peninsula stretches south from the port, separating the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea. Organised tours cross by ferry, follow the forest road to Nida, and include time on the dunes — one of Europe's most photogenic landscapes.
The ferry crossing from Klaipėda to Smiltynė is part of the experience — watching the port recede as you enter a world of pine forest and shifting sand. Nida's colourful fishermen's houses, amber galleries and lagoon views reward those who make the journey.
Dune climbing at Parnidis or nearby viewpoints is the highlight for many passengers. The scale of the landscape — golden sand against dark forest and blue water — is unlike anything else on a Baltic cruise itinerary.
This excursion needs at least 6 usable hours ashore including ferry and coach transfers. It is not suitable for very short port calls, but on a full day it delivers the experience that defines this region.
